Add a custom post type to posts in a widget

This http://wordpress.org/support/topic/show-posts-in-a-widget?replies=3#post-3622764 is where I learned how to add posts of a category in a widget.
However <?php the_content(); ?> doesn’t include a custom post type field.
How can I get my extra field to show up in the widget?
