Hi guys I’m installing a free GoDaddy theme and when I activate it all the content from the demo is lost and it says “My Blog” and everything is blank, no pictures or demo text is visible. You could say all the content is stripped away after installing the theme.

This is an issue I’ve experienced with trying to use other GoDaddy WP themes with other domains and hosting accounts.

Please help thanks! BTW GoDaddy is of no help over the phone

  • Hi @oliver9097,

I am one of the developers behind the GoDaddy themes here on WordPress.org. No demo content is imported with the theme. What you see when you ‘demo’ the theme is just that – a demo. We don’t include any of that demo content, as it would pollute your database with unnecessary data that doesn’t apply to all users.

However, if you are a GoDaddy Managed WordPress customer, and go through the setup process from the GoDaddy dashboard you should get a set of dummy content imported that you can immediately start working with.

If you are hosting with another host, that is not GoDaddy, and then download the theme from the dashboard (Appearance > Themes > Add New) or download it directly here from WordPress.org, no demo content will be included.

In response to the GoDaddy theme support team over the phone, they don’t support the themes that are hosted here on WordPress.org. All of the support is handled through the WordPress.org support forum for that respective theme, and our development team responds to and patches any issues that arise.

If you are still looking for some dummy content, there are a number of ways you can add dummy content to your site. There are multiple plugins that you can download from the WordPress.org plugin directory that will generate any number of posts/pages, import images, create users/comments etc.

FakerPress seems to work well for this use:

Thank you for the response. So literally the only thing that was applied from the theme installation was the colorway.

If I paid for a theme from say themeforest.com would all of the demo content go live upon activation?

    Hi @oliver9097,

When you installed the theme you installed the entire theme framework including the styles and functionality that come with the theme.

From here you can start creating pages and posts, and begin to populate your menu.

Once you start adding content, you’ll find that things will begin to look similar to the theme demo. If you need help constructing the pages, we recommend using Beaver Builder to help with the task.

To answer your question about Theme forest themes, that is correct. You’ll download the theme files, exactly as you did here on WordPress.org. When you activate the theme you’ll find that there is also going to be no content. Depending on how those theme authors handle things, they may include an XML file of dummy data that would mirror the demo they have setup or they may have their own set of functionality to automate the process of importing the demo files.

This is similar to how we handle things when setting up your site through the GoDaddy Managed WordPress platform (except it’s all done in the background and handled by us without any user interaction), but it’s not something that can be handled through the WordPress.org theme installation process.
