I simply cannot get the pilcrow theme to activate the submenu.

Can you walk me thru it?

    Thanks
    Dan

Hi Dan, here are a couple of guides to creating submenus in any WordPress site:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Menu_User_Guide#Creating_Multi-level_Menus

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus

Let me know how it goes!

Good morning. Thanks for the response.

Having already followed those guides is actually what prompted my post here. 😀

    Can I post screenshots?

Hi Dan, from the screenshot, it looks like your site is on WordPress.com, not self-hosted. (These forums are for people running the WordPress software on their own servers.)

It looks like you’ve set up a custom menu, but you haven’t yet assigned it to a menu location your theme.

All you need to do to finish the process is check off the box next to “Primary Navigation”, click the Save button, and you should be good to go!

    Aha! Self hosted

    and

Aha! Make Primary navigation. I wondered about that part since the top level menus were already functional.

    Thanks!

    Hi Kathryn,
I was wondering if you could help me with my Pilcrow drop-down menu.

On the upper right-hand side of my site I have a tab titled “Letters of Renaissance Women” http://www.lisakaborycha.com/letters-of-renaissance-women/ the drop-down menu is quite crowded and I would like to add several dozen more names to this list.

Is there a way either to create more space by widening the drop-down or by being able to visualize a longer list?

    Thanks!

    Lisa

I’m not sure how widening the drop-down would better accommodate more drop-down menu items, since each item still takes up its own line.

I’d probably suggest rethinking your menu system rather than continuing to add more sub-menu items. For example, perhaps group the names alphabetically in batches, or create “landing pages” for each alphabetically section, to avoid putting each one in the menu itself.

For example, you could create a landing pages for names A-L (or whatever division you like) and list all the names on the page and link them from there. You would then put these landing pages in your menu, instead of the individual pages.

p.s. in future, could you please start a new thread rather than adding your question to an existing one, especially one that’s old and already marked as resolved. Thanks!

    Dear Kathryn,

Thanks for your response – sorry about adding to an old thread. Can you please remind me how to start a new one for next time?

I asked about widening the drop-down because then I could fit an entire name on a single line, saving space. In any case the alphabetical solution you suggested had occurred to me.

In order to create these “landing pages” do I just add menu items and arrange them as I did with the names in that appear in the drop-down or is there another procedure involved?

Thanks so much for your advice – I really appreciate it!

    Best,

    Lisa

Lisa – to start a new thread go to the Support Threads section in Pilcrow (see link at top right) and scroll down to the post form.
