 * I need to activate the homapage boxes on the free version. Any idea to do it?

 * Download latest version of WordPress and then go to Appearance>Customize and 
   then select from under Front Page Settings>Your latest posts.
 * Once you do that you will be able to see homepage boxes on the front page.

 * Not the WordPress CMS but the theme is supposed to be updated by checking Appearance
   >Themes
 * If it doesn’t show any update notice there then leave it and follow the rest.
