• While trying to install another wordpress site in a different directory, I accidentally uninstalled the existing site. The result is that I now have a blank wordpress site.

However, I do have the backup of all my files from the day before this happened. Is there a way to reinstall wordpress and still have the same theme, content, etc as before it was accidentally uninstalled on the site?

  • sure – just re-install wordpress and put the same db info back in your wp-config.php and it will connect to the database as before and site will be same

all posts, settings, etc. are stored in the db

I accidentally uninstalled the existing site.

How did you uninstall? If you deleted your files, then you will restore those using FTP client to reupload to your host.

If you delete your WordPress database, then you will need to create the database and restore the contents of your database from your database backup. If you did delete the database and you don’t have a backup, then contact your host as they may have a backup.

The uninstall mistake occurred at the server-level. They have conveniently placed dangerous “uninstall” and “install” buttons for WordPress.

If you have all the files including directories backed up all you have to do is upload them back to your site exactly as they were before.

However, if you have only a database backup then you will have to re-install wordpress and rebuild your theme and any plugins you had or want. Also anything (ie.. pictures) that was in your wp-content/uploads directory might be gone as well if you didn’t back it up. In this case your database should be ok since deleting the files does not affect the database.
