Support » Localhost Installs » Accessing WordPress on MAMP outside local Mac?

  • I installed the MAMP Pro software and WordPress with no major issues. I am able to access the basic wordpress site fine on the mac server, but I don’t see how to set it up so I can access that same site (port 8888) remotely via the web as an actual web site.

Currently, if I go to the website URL (my server url +”:8888/wordpress”) it jumps to “localhost” and isn’t resolved or displayable.

So, how do I set up the wordpress mamp site so I can access it like any other website from anywhere?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey,

So setting a website using a server software like MAMP will only work on your local PC. What you want is a hosting server where you can host your website to be accessible on the internet from anywhere

When your run the MAMP server on your PC, you’re basically getting a local web server only for your PC. Once you finish developing your website you need to move it to a hosting server and register it with a domain name for it to be accessible on the internet.

    Hope this helps.

Unless your goal is to get your home system hacked, you don’t want your localhost install to be visible to the outside world.

It’s possible that MAMP has a security issue which allows outside access. If you currently access the site at http://localhost:8888, replace “localhost” with the IP address assigned to you by your ISP. If there is a security issue, your site might appear. It won’t work correctly because the access URL is different than the “site URL” value in the WordPress settings, but something would be displayed.
