Accessibility – Keyboard navigation
-
Hi all,
Having a small issue making my website accessible, which is massively important to our company.
The menu at the top of the page works fine when using a mouse, but when you use keyboard navigation to get around the page it will tab over each of the parents menu entries, but there is no way to open the submenus.
Space moves the page 1/2 way down.
Enter does nothing
Arrow keys move the pageI’ve tried looking at various plugins and none are helping. What is the best way for me to code this manually so I can get this to be accessible?
Many thanks,
Stu

Which theme is this regarding?
It’s a child theme of Alizee.
At least until I can learn to create my own from scratch and start with accessibility from the ground up 🙂
Starting with accessibility is easy, starting with a theme that hasn’t considered accessibility is hacky and hard.
Your theme doesn’t have an ‘Accessibility Ready’ tag: https://wordpress.org/themes/alizee/
Maybe it’s worth considering to browser a theme that is tagged with ‘Accessibility Ready’: https://wordpress.org/themes/browse/featured/
To be fair it does have a lot of accessibilty features built in, skip links etc it’s just this menu issue that is the problem 🙁
I’ll have a look at other themes, but hoping I can implement something myself quicker than redoing a theme.
I would recommend posting on your theme’s support section here: https://wordpress.org/support/theme/alizee#postform
Then you’ll reach people who are familiar with the theme.
FYI, it’s not necessary that your submenu items should be tabbable. As long as those submenu links are available on the parent page somewhere.
