 * Kanto, it seems a brief flirtation with S2Member before I found Groups has left
me with a number of unwanted “access_s2member_levelx” roles. I reinstalled S2Member(
just to try and get rid of them), set it to delete its own configuration on deactivation,
saved and then deactivated. But they are still there and it seems only Groups
can see those roles as User Role Editor can’t. What do I have to do to get rid
   of them?

 * Roles? Groups doesn’t work with roles so it can’t really do anything about these
🙂 Or do you mean capabilities? If so, then you can simply delete them under
   Groups > Capabilities.
