Absolute novice needs advice on building a horizontal site (4 posts)

    I have a wordpress.com blog.

I know nothing about anything (...set up a few sites using Weebly drag-n-drop functions in 2010. That's it.) and I want to create my own horizontal theme.

Something kind of like this or this in terms of richness, quality and layout.

I'd like to create my own, because I can't find online what I see in my head. I do not have the scratch to pay for a designer b/c this is a hobby site. Also, I am tired of being the last human alive who is afraid of web language and building things using code.

I'm open to the idea that this could take a really long time. I just truly have no idea where to start learning or what platforms/tools I need for building...anything. If someone could point me in the direction of Step A I would appreciate it a lot.

The blog will be used as a portfolio/art repository.

I plan to have photos, film, video and text. This is why many themes don't work because I need something that will display everything very well + be easily scrollable.

Necessity is the mother of invention, etc.

You should first build your website statically in HTML and CSS, separate from WordPress. Are you familiar with those technologies?

I have heard about HTML and used it in super rudimentary ways like <b> and sizing.

    CSS, not so much...

If I am building separate from here, where am I/what am I using to build it on?

    Thank you!
