Absolute Noob Needs Help Displaying Categories

    I apologize ahead of time for asking this question that has probably been beat to death.

    I’ve downloaded/activated over 8 plugins that “allow me to list categories within a page” and none, I MEAN NONE of them worked.
    They all said, use this short code [XXXXX] I did the short code, displayed the parameters as described in the readme files and every time these worthless plugins only display based on date of post.

    I’m looking for a plug in, I can activate, take a short code, tell it to display 5 articles and excerts from 1 specific category and actually work.

    I have no idea what I’m looking at when I see PHP, CSS, or JAVA. So anyone trying to help with actual script…. worthless, I don’t understand a single symbol within the code.

    So if someone is wiling to help, I would GREATLY GREATLY GREATLY appreciate that because I’m about to throw my computer out the window with this limited WordPress junk.
