Hi all, I’m new to wordpress so I didn’t knew I had to create a child theme for the parent theme, and currently I’m using the one-click-child-theme plug in to create my child theme as I won’t have any access to the FTP files and all.

I tried to delete the parent theme (2012) and reinstall but it seemed to have saved my amendments. Can I still create a child theme for this edited child theme so when a new update comes in it won’t wash away my themes? Or is it too late?

How does the theme updates thing work? I have already installed twenty twelve, so once an update comes along it will automatically update itself? Can I choose not to update so my changes won’t get washed away with the updated?

Would like to stress that I won’t have access to FTP files and all so any way to work around this would be gladly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • When you say, you made changes, what kind of changes did you make? Did you go in the Appearance > Editor and edit any of the template files, like the css or php.

I’m only asking because if you did delete the theme and then re-install, then the changes should have disappeared.

if you customized the theme using the customizer, then that’s different and those changes are just your preferences and saved in the database. That’s perfectly ok.

If and when there’s an update, you will get an update in your dashboard. It’s up to you if you choose to update the theme, but normally these updates come with new enhanced features and security updates, so it’s highly recommended that you update.

Finally with regards to FTP, I’m not sure why you don’t have that, but if it’s your site, it’s something that you should have. If you ever have to re-install with a backup, you will need that info.

Hi there yes I made minor edits with the editor. Oh perhaps it’s because the changes I did in customizer remained when I reinstalled it, that’s why I thought all my changes remained the same.

And thank you with all the explanation you provided! And no I don’t have access because my blog is hosted on another web domain which is not owned by me that’s why. Thank you so much! These info is just what I needed.

It works all fine now that I have deleted the theme, re-installed and created a child theme. Thanks~
