• Has anyone written a Theme for WordPress using images for the backgrounds which looks the same in all browsers?

  • I don’t get it. Is it that hard? What’s the problem exactly?
Or by “all browsers” you mean including IE5, Netscape 4, and the like?

Both Rin and Manji look good in Firefox v1.0.6, Safari 2, Netscape 7.0, IE 6.0, and IE 5.5.

Thanks. I’ll take a look at what’s going on in those themes. My work looks ok (generally) in those browsers too.

    alphaoide:
I mean everything beyond Netscape 4.2

I never think it’s hard, I actually do themes and junk for pleasure and relaxation. But it seems that there’s always a new browser, and always a new user who’s got a complaint about how different everything looks in “coffee” or “IE (version and platform rarely stated)”

I generally code for 7 browsers:
Safari, FireFox, IE 5.2 (mac), IE 6, Mozilla, Netscape 6, Netscape 7, and Opera

And it’s not enough it seems…

So I was just wondering if someone’s developed an image based theme that works in “all browsers.” To try and learn a bit more before giving up again…

… yeah, it gets to me.

And why do you limit yourself to WP Theme? Why don’t you check out the websites of some well-known web designers? Or check csszengarden? Those probably good candidates.

    Well…

I just reviewed my base themes in all seven browsers (with some kind help from two PC users) and personally, they all look so similar (aside from IE 5.1-5.2 for Macintosh) that I don’t have any idea what the complainers are going on about.

All the themes on AlexKing’s site suffer from the teeny tiny text hassle of IE 5.x (mac) including Manji and Rin. It’s a matter of how the browser addresses text (poorly) and choosing between coding for it (not going to happen) or adding a special style sheet just for it (possible.)

From my stats (10,000 plus unique IP’s hitting more than one page per day) most people who visit and use us work with FireFox, followed by IE 6, follwed by Safari. Then negligible amounts of other browsers…

Not to discard or exclude anyone, I was only wondering if there was a proven universal theme where images are the backgrounds.

I am going to proceed as planned.

Mac IE was discontinued three years ago. It’s just wasted space on your hard drive.

    Amen!

I quit supporting IE5 for Mac 2 years ago, along with Netscape 4.

Me too… dusted as soon as it was possible.
And yet, that seems to exclude so many folks who can’t seem to stop using it…

god bless her, my wife still instinctually uses IE mac. Now a days, when I find something on line I think she’ll like, I lie and tell it won’t work in IE, that only Safari supports it.

But truth be told, I have at least 2 sites a year, business/money related, that bork in Safari and FF, and only the wasted HD space will function with.
When I’ve done custom themes, I style to the lowest common form, IE 5.2 mac at 800×600. If it looks good there, and perfect in FF, I know not many others can complain.

Seems like the right plan of action.

As i only do charity work, and offer myself to public service it’s hard to take the criticism from people who don’t understand what it is to put 100 hours into an AIDS charity, and then get told great stuff like “You Suck!” or better “Mac Sucks!”

Feels divine, but my skin could use a bit of thickening.

I guess regarding IE 5.2 mac that using a different style sheet importer to get the base text up to the right size is probably to only way to solve the rift between what 0.9em and/or 9px looks like in that cursed appliation, yeah?

I generally code for 7 browsers:
Safari, FireFox, IE 5.2 (mac), IE 6, Mozilla, Netscape 6, Netscape 7, and Opera

And it’s not enough it seems…

If you look at usage statistics I think nowadays you should just consider 4:
    1. IE6 (and soon there will be IE7 as well)
    2. Firefox 1.0 (soon we should have 1.5) (and Mozilla and recent Netscape versions behave the same)
    3. Safari
    4. Opera

IE/Mac is practically dead, so is Netscape4 (finally!!) unless you code for a specific public (certain institutions still use NN4, but you can always use graceful degradation).

I think we should however add non-image browsers to be considered such as lynx and screen-readers, because we need to be aware of accessibility. (If it’s a public service website in the USA or UK you are legally obliged to do so.)
