A Killer Data base issue over cache (24 posts)

    Maybe this will help someone in advance.
    We have a website called World School Of Prophecy & News Events at wsopne.org or should I say had. We have some issues from day of one of this web site, one of them being AT&T web hosting, not supporting any WP version over 2.83.
    We worked on search engine optimization constantly and because we had a large site 140 + we were working on Page speed and trying to find a better cache plug-in. We were in the # 1 rank on first page search of Google in over 40 categories.

    About 27 hours on 9/5/10 ago We installed "W 3 Cache Plugin" and fatal error, so I uninstalled it, then could not get back into my dashboard, getting an error say that all the files did not uninstall. So i went in manually and and worked on it.

    Not knowing what the problem was, we finally reinstalled WP 3.01........Then that started all kinds of new issues, now our data base won't connect, passwords wont match, user name issues, I have to have a certain user name with AT&T and admin with WP, and wp keeps resting the password........i AM CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE. Our site has been down 30 hours, and because we have over a thousand url's we are generating 404's in a record way...LOL, I don't have to tell what that does to your search ranking.

    So i guess we have lost it all.

    Oh and by the way we found after the fact....the files that caused the original problem that did not uninstall from "W3 Cache Plug-in' was db.php & cache.php, if we had known this, we could have avoided this whole thing.........

    Our Site was officially closed this morning
    We could overcome the data base issue, we were one Post with 144 pages and when we finally got it up, we were 144 Post and zero pages, and I could only log-in as a user..........it did recognize me as the Admin.
    This just blew me away........
    well we will try again under new domain, new place and time.

    I can understand your frustration. I urge you not to give up on your website these kind of things can be worked out.

    Do you have a backup copy of your database? Also can you access your database through phpMyAdmin?

    The first step is to establish the database connection. When you reinstalled did you keep your wp-config.php file from the original install?

    Yes, it sounds to me like WP is looking for a database that doesn't exist, and isn't finding the real database.

    You also say you are having issues with your web host. They generally run backups (well, at least MY web host does).

    If you can access your web host's console, do as c3mdigital advised, and see if you can get to PHPMyAdmin.

    Once there, you may likely see TWO databases. One is going to be the shell install of WP, and the other will be the one you originally had, with the 141 posts/pages.

    Go ahead and export that as an *.sql file to your hard drive for safekeeping.

    Believe me, no plugin will ever wipe out a database. It's just that WP isn't looking where it should.

    I get "Error establishing a database connection".

    Believe it or not, this can be good news. It just means that you have WP pointed in the wrong place. Once you locate your old database info, and provide that to the config.php file, you'll have your site and all its contents back.

  6. I think I'd be looking for a new webhost, and move all my stuff (which as people have said, is still there).

    That was going to be my next suggestion, after the OP gets his database back up and running. :) Decent web hosts are a dime a dozen; there's no reason to put up with inferior hosting.

    Dominick, before you give up entirely there are a couple things that I would recommend.

    First, check to see if the data is OK in the database. If you don't already have access through your hosting control panel, I have a post that might help you install phpMyAdmin and get connected to your database.

    If you can get into it, do an Export! Just make sure you have a full export of the site first, to be safe.

    Next step, open your wp-config.php file (in your FTP root directory) and check that it's got the correct username and password, database connection information etc. The error your website is currently displaying is commonly found when your database is simply not connected.

    If you're able to see your database in step 1, most likely you're OK.

    If you can edit your file in step 2, most likely you can reconnect to the database.

    Worse case, Google has a cache of your site that you can recover your content from if you search for http://wsopne.org/, you'll see a link to the cache files.

    There's also a possibility that your database is in need of repair.

    Access your WordPress database via phpMyAdmin (most hosting providers offer this in their control panel), check all of the tables, and choose "Repair tables" from the pull-down menu.

    Thank you everybody, I am over whelmed here by the response!
    I cannot get anything out AT&T, they now sent me a letter stating we went over our data transfer, I have not ever seen anything like this, I have building sites for over Ten years...........I am not mad at WP, we just get AT&T to cooperate long enough to get it back up..................

    There is good news, we are have received over a thousand emails this morning stating what a blessing the WSOPNE has been to them, and still coming...

    So I now believe that we outside interference here...........

    We will find a new host, and rebuild a better site from the Ground up..........
    Now let Ask this..........How much damage has this done with google having all these 404's to the domian name WSOPNE.ORG

  11. Don't worry about the google 404s right now. Yeah, they hurt the SEO and pagerank BUT that only lasts as long as your site is down. Once you're back up and people can get to the site, you'll build back up quickly enough. Basically, don't sweat it. Work on getting the site back up. Cart comes after horse, and right now, your horse wandered off ;)

    AT&T as a webhost is ... well, they took over Yahoo, who took over SimpleNet and a slew of others. I would recommend a better host, for sure. You may have to pay up to get the site back up in order to get your DB back. This is the time you learn how important off-site backups are. Once your site's back up, you'll want to come up with a good strategy for that.

    Yea, it shoudn't be too hard to fix... Don't give up on your domain or all those posts..

    Let me know if your still stuck... Not sure what kinda traffic you get.. But hostgator is a good shared host and only a couple bucks a month... If ya wnat something a lil better and a dedicated machine plans at servint start at around 50 bucks...

    All of the advice here ihas been great and on target - I couldn't add anything
    as for web hosts that really give a crap - I've been with this one since they started almost and have had zero issues ever thay didn't resolve quickly
    not affiliated in any way - just hoping you have a better experience wherever you go

    Here is here we are looking at: has anybody delt with them?

    we get huge spikes in traffic.....we in between dedicated and shared
    we were $20 a month anyway
    We have some colleges that that teach from our site in the fall, so it needs to be able to handle a couple of hundred or so on at one time once in a while and times of the a hundred or so.........

    mediatemple has had a lot of security problems this year... not a big fan of there setups....

    I'd do hostgator or bluehost...

    Any descent host should do a couple hundrud visits a day. I've had many times that form my host with no issues at all.

    Media Temple had a hack problem recently and were very transparent about it - didn't hide it or blame any software - took responsibility for it
    I would say that is a plus

  20. I use LiquidWeb, but they're on the upper end of cost. I also think they're on the upper end of awesome. See... I used to use AT&T ;)

    We have at least 1000 new visits + returns and then 1000 referrals or so a day......we need 200 or so at the same time

    I'll throw in another vote for ASO.

    I moved all of my sites to them five years ago after a battle with a few lousy hosting providers (which shall remain nameless), and I have never looked back. Their support is top-notch, and though they claim not to offer support for third-party scripts, they'll often either tell you exactly what to do or just do it for you if it's a slow day.

    Yes, at this time they only offer email and chat support. They're hiring more employees to provide phone support eventually. Most companies outsource their phone support, so you're helped by someone with limited knowledge of your hosting environment who's probably supporting five other hosting providers simultaneously. ASO refuses to outsource their support, so you always get top-notch service and quick solutions. When online, they respond to live chats almost instantly, and support tickets are usually responded to within 5 minutes, depending on the priority you assign.

    (I should write a commercial for these guys.)
