Hi mr_ian;
optimizing JS (and CSS) can easily cause issues, that however in general can be fixed easily as well configuring Autoptimize correctly. There’s more info in the FAQ on how to troubleshoot. backup’s shouldn’t be needed either, as after deactivating AO (and optionally purging your page cache) all will be as before.

Hi Frank
Many thanks for the heads up on this, I concur removal was painless. From the FAQ I will try
“Disable the option “Aggregate inline JS” and activate “Force JavaScript in ?” and try again. Excluding ´jquery.js´ from optimization (see below) and optionally activating “Add try/catch wrapping”) can also help.”
If I can get it working I will update my rating. I am a novice with the technical aspects of web design so bear with me.
Thanks
Ian
Hi Frank
I enabling “Add try/catch wrapping” fixed the slider and also the menu/link in the mobile site.
I am testing the other settings now but my initial findings seem to suggest that as my “Performance scores” improve my “page load speeds” deteriorate.
Seems strange I will test some more
Many thanks
Ian
Make sure you do have a page caching plugin and avoid having JS (or CSS) that is unique to one page in your optimized JS (or CSS). Both items are explained in the faq as well 🙂
Hi Frank
Firstly a big thank you for bearing with me. I have experimented more now. Base scores I had before installing Autoptimize:
GTMetrix PS A92% Yslow C79%
Pagespeed Mob Perf 64% User93% Desktop 83%
Pingdom speed to stockholm 2.35 secs
Adding in WP Cache gave me better results that W3 and Super cache but the google pagespeed ratings were still low, especially mobile performance. Rendering above the line issues.
I added super simple speed on top of WP Cache and Autoptimise and got some small improvements. Typical ratings now:
GTMetrix PS A96% Yslow C87%
Pagespeed Mob Perf 71% User94% Desktop 89%
Pingdom speed to stockholm 0.39 secs
some useful speed and performance increases. I am sure some one who was more technical experienced could get them even better but I am happy.
Thank you
Ian
you’re welcome Ian, glad I could help 🙂
