• Screwy characters and gibberishy things are showing up on my site.
    I think it started to happen after I added some sort of WYSIWYG hack. But I restored the backup file and things remain the same.
    Could someone please take a look at my site and venture a guess as to what could be wrong?
    btw: the site is a work-in-progress

  • Try changing charset from:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
    to:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    Set the charset to utf-8 in Your WordPress Admin –> Options –> Reading

    I changed the charset but it didn’t work. So I reinstalled WP and started from scratch copying a pasting my entries into the new install. And the same problem happened again. I search the board again and found out others have had a similar problem, sometimes associated with using MICROSOFT WORD. Appearantly there is invisible formatting that screws up WP which doresn’t really make much sense, since the post preview looks fine and earlier versions of WP never gave me any problem with copying and pasting text from MS WORD.
    I even pasted text into notepad and saved it with the UTF-8 charset and it still didn’t make a difference.
    I’ve spent all night trying to fix this stupid problem and nothing seems to be working. And I don’t want to retype/revise lenghty articles when there should be a less crude solution available.
    I’m really going nuts here.
    I thought this problem would be simple enough to fix and yet it’s so persistent; for a while it seemed like my browser was just arbitrarily adding a different kinds of gibberish to my postings only to revert back to the original junk characters it had been displaying before.

    Ah, I see now that your “apostrophes” are ascii coded as … you may just need to use search/replace in a text editor (like EditPlus) and change that to a simple ' … and save the article back into wordpress (which will take care of making the more correct ’ apostrophe). Maybe someone else knows an easier way, but I don’t.
