• Is it possible to change the upload directory to outside the wp-content directory?

I have my wordpress installed to a completely different directory than the blog, so I would rather the pictures stay with the blog than the installation.

so instead of /public_html/blogs/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/ make it /public_html/blogs/graham.reeds/images/<year>/<month>/<date>

I’ve seen several discussions about this but all talk about moving it about in the wp-content and/or talk about a 1.5.2 plugin (ilfilosofo) that does something but no-one actually says what it does (apart from make it like the 1.5.2 style of upload (which I’ve never seen)).

    Thanks, Graham.

  • AFAIK, you can put it anywhere you want to, as long as you give the correct path in the Options/Miscellaneous screen.

Alas it would seem not: Giving /graham.reeds/uploads as the folder to upload to it complains about /home/digitalu/public_html/blogs/wordpress//graham.reeds/uploads/2006/10 not being writable (just need to change the file permissions).

I want it to be from blogs/graham.reeds/uploads. I’ve tried adding ../ to the front of the path but that translated to: wordpress/../graham.reeds/uploads/2006/10

Where is the path location stored and is it hardcoded to be off the install root or is it easily configurable?

    Thanks, G.

No clue where it’s “stored”. You just have to give exact info in wp-admin/Options/Miscellaneous – and truth to tell, I don’t know if that’s server path or URL – the “default” shown there could be either.

    Try both, I guess.

Having the same problem. Is there a way out of this?

    Check this out: http://chriskalani.com/archive/upload-outside-of-the-wordpress-directory

I had the same problem and got it to work pretty simply.
