Support » Fixing WordPress » Exporting a Theme Without the Content

  • Hi All

I am currently running a blog and I have been testing a certain theme on a different hosting website. This theme has been changed and edited to suit my needs and I am not wanting to move the finished theme over to the new website.

What is the best way to do this?

I don’t want any of the dummy content, or dummy authors or media files I just want to take the theme, design and layout and implement it on the new site.

    Any help much appreciated

    Regards

    Rob

  • Content is in the database only. So that won’t go anywhere unless you export your database.

Themes are files. You need to access your hosting control panel file manager or your FTP software.

Find wp-content/themes/ direction and your theme folder will be in there. It is a case of downloading the folder, then uploading it to the same directory on your new WordPress installation.

    Thank you, big help!

There’s also a plugin written by Ozh that will zip the theme file from your test site. You can then download it to your computer and upload it to the new site through the Theme -> Install Themes -> Upload in your WordPress dashboard. This does the same thing as the FTP download-upload, but without needing FTP.
