• Hi all,

Sorry if this has already been covered!

I have a domain name that I am wanting to keep with a website on it already, however I want to start creating a new look/site.

I don’t have the knowledge to do this as a localhost, so thought there must be a way of doing it.

So, if I have access to a subdomain/external domain and build the new site on that can I link the original domain to that database? Will this work?

    Regards,

    Jayce

PS: Basically I don’t want my site to go down or have it spitting out code until it is fixed properly.

  • You are asking if you can access a database on domain-b from domain-a? Yes, but only if your host allows it. You might be talking about a remote connection to the database server and hosts don’t always allow that.

Yep. If the new site is located within the same domain (either as a subdomain or subdirectory) you’ll be able to simply link to the database just as you would with your existing site.

    Thanks guys!

I have bought a theme with a built in shop (as i keep having problems when I use a plug in and they update it), so I am going to build the shop on a sub domain

    http://www.shop.mysite.com

I still have my site at the standard URL.

If I like the site and I can get it to work/look good for my non shop stuff (I think it will but until I see if everything will fit where), then I will populate this with new posts/pages and once I have it up to a certain level I want to use it on the standard url.

    Cheers for replying.
