Erich That really depends on how your hosting and file structure is set up, inside of your hosting did you setup a folder called blog with all the wordpress files inside of it?
Agreed but sometimes that information can be overwhelming to a novice, but they do explain everything well to do what your looking to accomplish.
@officialwill: that’s as easy as it gets, and if one has installed WP, it’s not much more difficult.
@officialwill Yes, I do have a folder called blog that has all of the WordPress files inside of it.
@songdogtech Thanks. I’ve seen those instructions before. I just want to make sure I understand the process thoroughly before making the change. I had a recent experience with a URL change that caused me a lot of trouble and I just want to avoid that again.
@erichschuler: Even easier: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory#Using_a_pre-existing_subdirectory_install
Doesn’t matter what the folder is called, i.e., blog or wordpress.
You don’t need a redirect in .htaccess. You can use a 301 redirect in .htaccess to strip all URLs of /blog/, but for you it’s easier to redirect a few individual URLs using WordPress › Redirection « WordPress Plugins
@erichschuler
First Take your index.php file and open up a text editor add blog just the way I did below:
require(‘./blog/wp-blog-header.php’);
Then Copy this file back inside the blog folder but also one level above outside the folder so you’ll see folder named blog and index.php side by side
So now on the settings–>general–>
wordpress address is showing: http://www.erichschuler.com/blog
site url is showing: http://www.erichschuler.com/blog
If that’s correct in this area you should then just be able to remove the four letter in blog from the Site URL Only click save and voila. now your site will point to just your name
If you’re still concerned check out the book dig into WP is a great source and helped me a lot when I was getting started a few years back.
