How do I create an editable profile

For a specific type of user (to be defined), I’d like to create a directory for all of the users of that type, plus individual pages for each of them. The users can edit the information in their profile whenever they want.

I’d like all of this stored in an database and queried automatically when the appropriate pages are loaded.

Is there a plugin that will do this?
