• This is a great plug-in as it works and because it presents a nice organized description presentation also.

I have some inactive websites that are still good work examples- they are optimized screen captures. Although I can show them using a link directly to media library, I’m not keen on showing the link as it represents a security issue.

Is there a way to rename or not present the link to pictures/graphics?

    Thank you,

  • Thanks for your kind words.

Do you want to hide the link on all websites? Or just a few?

    Thanks

Hi Dan- thanks for your reply. In a perfect world, I would like to have the option of either babblizing the image link (so it can’t be followed and messed with) or being able to replace the link with a description:

    ex.
say the link currently shows as “http://someguyswebsite/library/images/danscoolpic.jpg”

it would be nice to show instead…(no link, just title)

    “yourpicturetitle”

If you can solve this, it would be a home run that many people would appreciate. I’ve seen this issue discussed a lot with no practical solve.

    Thanks for your consideration,

    Erik

    Hi Erik

Thanks. Got a few questions I need answers to so that I can actually help.

The plugin already allows you to change the template, which is where you could remove the link. However, that applies to all thumbnails being shown on the site.

As I asked before, Do you want to hide the link on all websites/items in the portfolio? Or just a few?

Why would the image link be messed with? Who would mess with it?

    Thanks
    Dan

    Hi Dan:

I’m not sure what yo mean by the plugin allowing you to change the template. Do you mean theme? If so, regardless of theme, the link appears using this plugin.

What I have been hoping for is that in your plugin that a link (corresponding to all photo/graphics thumbnails (not thumbnails that represent links to live websites) being used in your plugin can either have no link showing or replace the link with a title.

The reasons for this is that the link for a photo or graphic

    1.)Can be long and attractive. (i.e. http://awebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Mrk41GothamWebsite.jpg).

2.) In addition, as far as web security goes, your plugin provides a clue to hackers as to the structure of your site and graphics files are typical targets. Yes, one can also look this WP structure up but why make it easy for a hacker to know your structure and file naming conventions? Why do people hack? Who can say, the best rationale I have heard so far is, “because they can.”

Shrink the Web-The other thing that is a bump in the road as far as using this plugin goes is forcing a stop and extra step by requiring people to halt progress, address a third party-Shrink the Web and give it consnet to continue. It seems like the type of impedance that causes people to cease. If nothing else people might think it is a hijacking site.

Disable Plugin CSS- this is a nice, much appreciated feature. In my case, I simply want to change the default font to the same font the current theme uses. This apparently can’t be done in the Layout Settings page. The css you have designed here is nice. It’s what makes this plugin so appealing. If you disable it, that nice formatting is gone and it doesn’t seem to hand-off style (font type, in particular) to the theme.

In the meantime of waiting to see if the above link/style issue might be something that could be changed with your plugin, I found another plugin that does what I was hoping yours could/would do for pictures/graphics. It is called WEBPhysiology Portfolio. You might want to check it out. It looks and operates similar to yours and works nicely for photos and graphics with no link(unless you want it). It’s been a nice solve and doesn’t involve the Shrink the Web step.

Thank you Dan. I hope this helps.

I’m not sure what yo mean by the plugin allowing you to change the template. Do you mean theme? If so, regardless of theme, the link appears using this plugin.

The plugin has a section called Layout Settings, where you can edit the template. This is where you can remove the URL from the rendering part if you wish.

What I have been hoping for is that in your plugin that a link (corresponding to all photo/graphics thumbnails (not thumbnails that represent links to live websites) being used in your plugin can either have no link showing or replace the link with a title.

I’ll have a think about how this can be done then.

If you have a paid account with ShrinkTheWeb, this is not an issue. They had to implement it as hackers were using their service to trick people into going to phising sites.

Disabling the CSS is so that you can use your own custom CSS to change the design of the thumbnails. It sounds like you’re not writing your own CSS to do this.

Having a custom design would require custom CSS, which is beyond the scope of the plugin. It’s something that you or a web designer/web dev should be doing. My company can do it, but it’s a chargeable service.

    Kind Regards

    Thanks Dan:

    – I’ve been onto “Layout Settings”- will revisit it.
    – Shrink the Web strikes me as a “bait and switch” going from a free to paid Remora that doesn’t need connection to this plugin- this may be a deal breaker, I don’t want people visiting my website going through that extra step(s). I’m sure you understand.

I can do .css etc. on my own but the luxury your plugin promises is that it offers to do things for you, hence it’s appeal. If I’m doing this work, then there is no need or I just move to a plugin such as the one I mentioned to you that does it all. As it stands, the combination of yours and WEBPhysiology Portfolio has gotten me where I wanted to go. I had just hoped that yours would do it all.

Thanks Dan, I appreciate the focus you’ve put into this. Issues aside, I think you’ve done a great job with this plugin.

    Hi Erik

We’ve added a feature to deal with hiding a link if required. This should be in the next release.

    Kind Regards

That is really terrific news. Thank you. Next stop: no more Shrink the Web page funnel.

    Thanks Dan,

    Erik

The STW interstitial page was removed in July 2012 by STW. I’m still working out how that affects the plugin from a development point of view.

It’d be worth trying to see if you change the setting to use the Paid option in the settings (even with a free account). See if that works…
