[Plugin: Polylang] Polylang Greek Language Locale

    A great plugin indeed, works great and most of all it’s stable.

    I have one small request for you to consider and it’s about the Greek Language. I think the default locale should be:

    Locale: el_GR
    Language code: el

    If I don’t set it manually it causes problems, because the corresponding lang file is called el_GR.po – which I think is the correct. Also the flag icon .png file should be el_GR.png in order to be displayed.

    As you can see ont the WordPress languages repository, the official WordPress locale for greek is ‘el’:
    http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-i18n/el/branches/3.4/messages/

    As far as I have understood, the policy for choosing the locale is adding the country code only when there are differences of languages between countries. For example en_GB, en_CA are different from US English. But when the language is spoken in only one country or if there is no language variant, then only the language code, without the country code, has been chosen as WordPress locale

    I see.. It seems you’re right Chouby.

    I did a further investigation on the locale subject and it seems that el is the right locale for Greek in WordPress.

    It wasn’t obvious at first, because, for the most part, every other system in the world uses el_GR for Greek – Greece: Linux @ CERN, Oracle, IBM. …

    The Greek language is also spoken in Cyprus, but, in essence, the difference is that of English UK and English US.. Basically none.

    It also seems that el_GR is the same as el_CY as far as wordpress localization.

    By the way, thanks again for a real “life saver” plugin.! 🙂
