    I tried to add a flag counter and revolving globe to my side bar. Got the HTML codes for both items. Went to Appearance, Editor, sidebar.php and inserted/pasted the HTML codes for both items. I clicked on Update. It came back and said Update completed. But nothing changed. The two items are not there.
    Can you help?

    Why not just put them in a widget?

    Let me explain that I am not a technical person (sorry about that)! How would I put them in as a widget?

    The .com directions are pretty close to what we use on .org, and have better pictures πŸ™‚

    You’d just make a text widget and paste that HTML into it πŸ˜€

    here is the page http://blog.synthesisthree.com/
    The code I inserted is for a smaller flag counter

    Holy moley..How to I make the HTML codes I have into a text widget

    This looks like it is way out of my league. I do not understand what is being said on that page.

    You can just paste the HTML into a text widget. Nothing else really needs to happen.

    But I do not understand what a text widget is or how to make it or how to paste my HMTL into it…see what I mean. I require easy instructions like-step one go to appearance; step 2 click on ___; step three paste your HTML here; step 4 press ok; and voila, the flag counter and revolving globe now appear at the bottom of my right sidebar on my home page and they stay there. And this has to happen without me accidently wreaking havok and totally destroying the blog page. The instructions for WordPress are set up for teachnical people not for the regular person. It is over my head. It is very frustrating. πŸ™

    But I do not understand what a text widget is

    http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Widgets

    access the widgets under
    dashboard – appearance – widgets;
    drag a textwidget into (one of) the widget/sidebar area on the right;
    this opens a textfield where you can paste your html code …

    Paste both HTML codes (there is a separate code for the counter and for the globe) into like the Showcase Sidebar? or Footer Area One or two? Where on the page will they show up if I put it there? I assume if I want it in the right sidebar I paste the codes in the Showcase Sidebar? And there is no update button – so I just go back to my page and they will be there? I assume if I don’t like it, I can just go back in and delete the HTML?

    into like the Showcase Sidebar? or Footer Area One or two? Where on the page will they show up if I put it there?

    try it – this is the only way to get a feel for your site and what is happening when you change things in the dashboard.

    ‘primary’ and/or ‘secondary’ will show in the sidebar (left or right sidebar depends on the theme option settings).

    ‘footer’ is obvously clear, there are just more than one of them.

    ‘showcase’ refers to a sidebar showing only when you are using the ‘showcase’ page template with a static page.

    I assume if I don’t like it, I can just go back in and delete the HTML?

    exactly…

    I have Theme Twenty Eleven so I don’t use the Showcase side bar right? So if I do not want it as a footer (bottom of the page) where do I drag the text widget so that the items show in my sidebar so that they appear under the last thing listed (WordPress.org) under the META heading? Just paste them in META?
    I know just try it, but I am a little nervous – first time, you know…so any guidance is greatly appreciated!

    There’s one named ‘Main SideBar’ – Drag the Text Widget into that section, and then you will see what to add. Go ahead and try it. If you make a mistake, you can delete the widget without any harm.

    You’re going to have to try this at least once to get used to it.
