Cannot figure out how I can change the language. Tried both “lang” parameter in the shortcode and username/language syntax in the profile link. Neither worked. I would like to use French.

try using the full profile url instead of the username/lang params, for me the italian one is:
http://www.linkedin.com/in/fabrizioballiano/it
so for french it should be
http://www.linkedin.com/in/yourusername/fr
