• My category list at http://www.mindbodyspiritjournal.com has gotten completely out of control.

    I’m on WP 2.x (non widget).

    I would like to;

    1. Display only maybe 10 parent categories in the sidebar (each followed by a dynamic number indicating the number of posts in that parent and its subcategories.)

    2. Lump all my existing categories under the 10 parent categories.

    3. Have a parent category display all its subcategories when your mouse hovers over it. A drop down menu of sorts. (But that is not an essential.)

    Think there’s an off-the-shelf plug-in that will do this for me?

    Will I mess up my Google indexing if I give current categories new parents?

    Thanks,
    kwc

  • Yes, it seems you have more categories than posts… which somehow defies the whole idea of categorization = organizing the content.

    1. http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_list_cats
    See the parameter “children”

    2. You have to do that manually by editing your catgeories: Manage > Categories

    3. There might be a “fold category” menu somewhere… never used it (search)

    4. If the category names are NOT part of your permalinks, then not.
    But if you had permalinks like:
    yoursite.com/whatevercategory/postname – then you are doomed if you change them 🙂

    WELL I like to know it’s possible to place instead of no of post with no of view with out using any plugin

    xinfo, don’t hijack the topic. And the answer is NO.
