You should certainly look at what’s causing your site to be slow, but after you’ve done all you can if you still have issues consider caching plugins like W3 Total Cache or WP Varnish.
These can reduce the loading time by keeping a rendered copy of each page on your server, rather than requiring the server to produce it on each load.
The content I am providing is very relevant to the searches people are performing to find the site.
which possibly means that the people are getting what they are after, directly on the page or past they get sent to by the search engine.
bounce rate only means that the users are just viewing one page and not going to other pages in the site.
what I would be looking for is a nice ‘Avg. Visit Duration’ or ‘Avg. Time on Page’ which lets me assume that the people are actually reading the page(s).
my site has a bounce rate of about 83% (the most viewed post has 87%) but an ‘Avg. Visit Duration’ of over 1 minute (most viewed post has an ‘Avg. Time on Page’ of 7 minutes) and I am happy with that.
I Second what @alchymyth said. Average visit duration is an important metric to verify.

In regards to visit duration, all of the visits that are bounces are 0:00 duration. I just assumed that you couldn’t measure duration unless someone went to a 2nd page. I use Google Analytics, am I wrong about this?
I would have agreed with you, but this article seems to explain it differently (i quickly ran through it). Read the last section, How Visit Length is Calculated.
if you read it closely, to get more accurate tracking, you have to add more engagement tracking to the page.
Without additional set up, if you just view 1 page the time would be zero.

Maybe, but how much time do they spend there? Your pages are too short. Think of Wikipedia where most of the places you have on your site can be found with much more compelling content and photos. See the internal linking and the usefulness of the content there. Try something taking it as an example.

Unfortunately, I have to tell you that Bounce Rate which is a very important metric of SEO needs a lot of time and space to explain and to understand, and I do not think this is the forum for that.

I appreciate your feedback, but I am looking for wordpress technical help regarding pages loading slow, which I understand can sometimes be an issue. I’m not sure why you said international traffic isn’t an issue, when sites hosted in the US do not load as fast in other countries. I think this could be an issue.
I will take steps to figure out whether or not the pages are not engaging enough, but I’ve been a web project manager for 7 years. I understand SEO and I’m not looking for SEO help at this point, but a better understanding of whether my page loads are too slow.

Another great tool to check out is YSlow!. It’s a browser plugin that gives you insight into the HTTPs requests and assets that make up your site. Good way to benchmark progress after you do some tweaking.
