Put Version Number in Text File or in Code

It would be very useful to have the version number in the code of a wordpress directory, in a changelog file or in a specific place in the code.

The instructions at http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Versions both seem to refer to using a browser to get the version number, which seems a bit silly.
