  • I don’t like the green background, but it looks to be a nice clean theme.

Agreed, samboll. The background is busy and adds nothing but “noise”.

Otherwise, it’s different (ALWAYS a plus!) and interesting.

Here’s my opinion for what its worth…

    Screenshot 1

    raptrex,

I love the images – it adds a really nice explosion of color to the white/gray background. Red really stands out.

Your concept of using floating boxes to display the reviews (with rating stars) across the page is good, but the screen shot you provided suggests distorted viewing.

The longer I looked at it, the less inclined I was to stay and linger. It isn’t happy viewing on the eyes.

My suggestion is to keep all floating boxes the exact same size that way, when the eye travels horizontally it isn’t immediately put off by the display of uneven boxes.

Also, you might consider keeping the spaces between the floating boxes (top, right, bottom and left) EQUAL to its neighbor to make browsing easier.

Another suggestion is to keep the images one size, too, as the eyes always tend to seek mirror dimensional shapes first, before accepting abstract ones.

My other suggestion is to keep blue images away from your header and the top of the page, as the header is blue, too, and gives off a ‘bland’ look and feel. Any other color near the top will work (go, red!).

With all that nice color in your ‘content’ section, the font in the side bar is fine. A different color might be helpful; as it now stands I thought it was a little bland – unless you’re downplaying your sidebar contents so not to distract from your content body?

You might need to nudge a little more space between your tags, so the words aren’t cut off as interest grows. The blue/gray tags are being cut off by the white tag word.

Otherwise, screenshot 1 was pretty good.

    Screenshot 2

I really like that red image! It’s a pity it’s so small. When you consider the entire page is dedicated to one review, it’s a shame, really, that the image is tiny in reference to one’s monitor size.

Why not display the image to the full advantage of what you’re trying to achieve?

As a single entry article, make the reviewed image stand out by offering a larger version. Display it like a trophy. That is the purpose of what you’re trying to achieve, right?

Then, as you’ve already done, you can list all comments to the side. It will look really neat when you have lots and lots of comments trailing down one side, and a really nice sized image capturing interest in the main content body section.

    What do you think?

Overall, the color contrast wasn’t too bad. If you like it, then that’s fine. I wasn’t too fussed on the comment color background and blue link color – a little too blue for me. But if you like it, then go for it. The site is yours – you can do whatever you want.

    Hope this helps.

PS: Unless I’m looking at different screenshots, I didn’t see any green backgrounds? Did I miss something?

katgirl, depends on the monitor. On my dev screen, it was dark teal.

I didn’t know that. Thanks vkaryl.

Heh. It’s amazing how different it can be; I have two “non-matched” (meaning different manufacturers though the same size, res, and refresh) screens. Colors are MARKEDLY different from one to the other. My daughter just bought 2 Sony 17″ “matched” LCDs (meaning identical down to the model numbers) and she notices a difference from the left to the right one.

    It’s weird.

samboll: my background is gradient blue to black

vkayrl: should i take out the diagonal lines?

KatGirl: i was testing different image sizes so thats why the boxes are uneven.

Also how can i make the space even between the floating boxes?

You cant tell in the picture, but to the right of the box is a “—” in white to give it a bit of space.
I think i tried padding, but I’ll try again.

Could someone give me a suggestion for equal spacing between the boxes?

When you say blue images, you mean the background right?
    I’ll take that into consideration.

Yes i have to fix the tags.

Screenshot 2 was a “single post view” with comments

I am kind of planning to make this a video, rating site
so you think i should put the video on the page too?
If so, the post is just an image that links to the video site (youtube, googlevideo). How can i make it so when i view the “single post view” with comments, to show the video as well. But i dont want the video to show on the main page (screenshot 1) just the image?

the background was suppose to be blue to gray with black diagonal lines. Im going to change this.

THANKS FOR EVERYONES OPINION. expecially katgirl

    raptex,

blue images as in your review images inside your floating boxes. Your header has blue font. The first two boxes had blue images.

Too much blue… too close together…

Your background was fine – at least from my viewing pleasure.

You can find all your info re: floating boxes and equal spacing here, to name just a few:

yay update on the main page
    http://raptrex.googlepages.com/screen3.png
to get an equal spacing around the floating boxes, i used
    MARGINS!!!!
    thx again katgirl
i still need to fix the tags
    also i changed the background
and made all the boxes even

and i still need input on this:

I am kind of planning to make this a video, rating site
so you think i should put the video on the single post viewing page too?
If so, the post is just an image that links to the video site (youtube, googlevideo). How can i make it so when i view the “single post view” with comments, to show the video as well. But i dont want the video to show on the main page (screenshot 1 and 3) just the image?

    ok update to the index
    http://raptrex.googlepages.com/screen4.png

i figured out the question i asked above this post
using the “continue reading post” thing

and an update to the single post view
    http://raptrex.googlepages.com/screen5.png

I like what you’ve done. The alterations are great, as too the floating boxes!

I also like the additional information you’ve provided ie: author, web url & download graphics, but I’m undecided if I like the individual blue/gray border/dividers for each one.

Would you consider doing another snapshot of the single post view:

    1) make your image slightly larger (pretty please)
    2) center your image in the body content area
    3) group your icon/graphic (author, url, download, etc) together with – no tags, feeds, trackback address and put them into ONE blue/grey divider box and put it, say, 20px beneath the image left side?

This, of course, is just a suggestion.

I like the color contrast of the divider, but I think the three dividers, plus the extra info (trackback addres, etc) looks too busy as it now stands, and a little unclean.

Do you know what I mean?

Otherwise, I like it. Good job on the boxes.

    (@raptrex)

lol i did this really quick since i saw your reply
    http://raptrex.googlepages.com/screen6.png

i just didnt make the image bigger
and for suggestions number 2, centering it will make the main page off a bit

it looks cleaner and neater, (less cluttered) but what happened to your “no tags”, “feed for this entry”, “trackback address”?

    I’m such a nag, aren’t I?

    Thread Starter raptrex

    (@raptrex)

well actually i cant put it all in one box
since author, site, download is part of the post
    but ill think of something

maybe i can blend it so it looks like 1 box

    Thread Starter raptrex

    (@raptrex)

    haha got it to work
    excellent suggestions katgirl
