I can’t get my around the benefit of tags over categories. My site has categories and I can select multiple categories when posting, but i was thinking of changing to http://sw-guide.de/wordpress/category-tagging-plugin/ but i’m not sure whether there are any benefits of doing this.

As far as I can tell I could select multiple categories or multiple tags – what’s the difference?

    Could anyone explain?

    Thanks

  • As I see it (and there are as many different views on this as there are people you ask), categories are a general way to organize information. Tags are more specific. They are not the same thing.

It really depends on how you want to do things, but most people use both categories and tags.

Generally speaking, categories are used to define fairly broad areas of topics, while tags are used to point out specific details.

For example, if I post an entry about my night on the town, I might put it under my “general spew” category, and perhaps one or two other categories as well. But my tags would consist of specific things I mention, such as the names of the bars I went to, perhaps some of the better beers I tried, the word “tube top” to describe what I saw that evening… 😉

Point is that I tag the hell out of things. Tags let me relate posts together based on details in the posts, while categories let me relate them together into broad topics of similar things. If that makes any sense.
