Would like to make a knock off ning/facebook type site

I have wanted to make my own social network for a long while. I basically want to emulate the model used on facebook/ning. Where the user can create their own place on the net. I like how ning allows the user to start a sub group as part of a much larger group. Is this possible with wordpress?
