I found the answer about the category colors, but still not the themes.

Themes are available in the Premium version. Don’t get mistaken by the name. Premium is free and will stay free, it only offers more features and that’s where the name comes from.
You can update to premium directly from settings page of ai1ec. There is a green button that says upgrade to premium.
Once that you upgrade to premium, a new menu item will appear under Appearance -> Calendar Themes
Click on it and it will list the available themes. We currently have 4 available themes – Vortex, Gamma, Plana, Umbra.
Let me know if you need additional help.

OK, thanks so much for this info! I thought the themes were available with the free version. It is a bit misleading.

Yes sorry about it. We were forced to move to our own host but we still want to be present on wordpress so that’s why we have 2 version – WordPress version that is hosted on WordPress and Premium that is hosted on then.ly – both are free and will stay free. Then.ly is the version where we will introduce all of the new features – we will only apply bug fixes on the WordPress version.

No worries. Thanks for the explanation.
