Adding a carousel to the homepage

This is probably really simple and I am just looking past the answer. I have recently had a new template design created. I want to add a carousel of latest posts to the home page. All the plugins I am looking at are great, but I have only found how to ad them to a post. Could someone please explain in simple terms, where I add the plugin so that it appears at the top of the home page and displays the latest posts.
