• I’m trying to understand what the “CSS Classes” option does on custom menu items. If I add a tag for “CSS Classes” shouldn’t I see that tag associated with that menu item in the page source?

I’ve tried this and the tag I enter does not appear in the page source.

  • The CSS Classes enable you to style that menu item in the style.css

I wrote a post on adding social media icons using CSS Classes, it might help, there is a download so you can see the styles for the icons.

Okay but when you enter “nav-facebook” or “nav-twitter” in the “CSS Classes (optional)” text box, shouldn’t the resulting menu item have that class in the resulting output page source?

    Hi,
It could be your theme, does your theme use a Custom Walker or an argument in the call to the nav menu that could be changing the standard calls?

    Twenty Eleven Child Theme:
Yes it will have the class on the menu item, if yours does not then make sure you Create a Custom Menu, SAVE MENU, assign the Template Location and SAVE MENU, saving at each stage is important!
