• Hi. I tried this once and EVERYTHING got deleted, so I need some help doing it right.

I have wordpress installed. I have been working on a WordPress site while my mail site is still active. Now, I am ready for my WordPress site to be live, so I need to move its location. Right now it is at: wwww.site.com/wordpress, and I need to move it to wwww.site.com.

Can anyone help me with some steps?

  • The way I like to do it is (assuming it’s not a multi-site installation)…

    1) Change the URLs in Settings > General to remove the /wordpress (or whatever the subfolder name is). After you do this your site will appear to be broken.

    2) Move all of the WordPress files and folders from the subfolder to the root folder. After that your site should resolve again.

    3) Check your Settings > Media and any plugins that save files to the server (e.g. Google XML Sitemap, any plugins that back up your database, etc.) to make sure that the URLs specified are correct.

    4) You may have to update the URLs to the images in your pages and posts. An easy way to do it is with the Search And Replace plugin.

    IIRC that’s about it.

p.s. It’s a good idea (as always) to back everything up first. If you run into any trouble, don’t panic and don’t try everything under the sun w/o asking for advice. It can always be fixed but the fewer things that have been changed, the easier it will be to diagnose and repair.
