• Man. This is bad. I have 14,844 comments in moderation and when I attempt to moderate them, I get the following error:

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@bareknucklepolitics.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Any ideas on how to clean this up?

  • phpmyadmin.
then install askimet or something else that catches comment spam before it goes into moderation. By the amount of comments you mention, I would reccomend paying more attention too, ie, taking care of them before they reach an unmanagable amount — going out of town? turn off commenting.

are all these comments on a single post?

can you moderate a few at a time?

No, they are on several posts but I get about 1,000 a day so it’s hard to keep up with…

what do I do with phpmyadmin?

what are you reasons for wanting to moderate if you have such a high load of comments coming in? Spam? If so, then you may be better off choosing one of the many plugins that has Captcha in it.

start here and look for spam related plugins. best be putting a stop to it.

Captcha is effective in weeding out spam – unfortunatly, it also weeds out valid comments – i.e. People are less inclined to bother, and Captcha CAN be defeated by a determined attacker (which most causual spam bots are NOT).

I’d second the Akismet vote – although there’s no reason you can’t run SEVERAL anti-spam plugins at once – Captcha, Akismet, etc…

Yikes. If these are all spam, I’d install Akismet and Bad Behavior at least. BB will block quite an amazing amount of automated spam silently, and Akismet will catch the rest.

I would hesitate before implementing captchas of any kind. I know that I generally won’t comment if there’s a captcha, because it’s usually too much of a pain.

In this case, I think I’d start with Spam Karma 2 as it has the option to “re-process” all the old comments, if I recall correctly.

If I remember right, Akismet has a captcha feature… Bad Behavior isn’t compatible with all servers, especially GoDaddy ones. So it seems that you should just try out a few of the different plugins mentioned here and see which one suits your needs the best.

    good luck,

Akismet does not have any form of captcha.

    Captchas don’t work.
    Akismet does.

I agree with Otto there – all you have to do is turn off javascript and the captchas are rendered meaningless.

I find Akismet to be wonderful – I can still moderate comments, but it has caught all spam attempts trying to come in. Should it get worse, I may look into that “Bad Behavior” one because I keep hearing good things about it – but I haven’t reached the point where I need more yet 🙂
