subdomains/subdirectories Go Daddy

    I am converting a real estate site to multisite. It is hosted at GoDaddy on a shared server, so they tell me I have to use sub-directories, not sub-domains when I go to multisite.
    But when I go to the Create a Network screen on WordPress I see this line:

    “Because your install is not new, the sites in your WordPress network must use sub-domains. The main site in a sub-directory install will need to use a modified permalink structure, potentially breaking existing links.”

    So does that mean I cannot use sub-directories and I have to install a new site? Help!

    On further exploration I think the problem is that my WordPress site is over a month old. I found this in the “Before you install” page: “You cannot choose Sub-directory Install (for a path-based network) if your existing WordPress installation has been set up for more than a month, due to issues with existing permalinks. (This problem will be fixed in a future version. See Switching network types for more information.) “

    Is there a way to go around this?, the site has only been up for just over one month

    Yes 🙂

    Go through the set up, but when you copy the extra lines into your wp-config, edit the one for ‘Subdomain’

    It’ll say TRUE. Change to FALSE. Drink a beer.

    (This WILL cause /blog/ to be put into your URLs for posts on your main site, by the way, so you’ll have domain.com/blog/postname )

    I found this on the interwebs, so apparently there is a way to remove the blog slug. Not sure if I want to go through the hassle

    If you ever resave your permalinks, the slug comes back, just FYI.

    I’d leave it be, and set up a .htaccess redirect if you already have a lot of posts. (Pages are unaffected)

    So I was thinking: if the blog is new you can set up sub-directories. After a while though, you will have accumulated a number of posts and then how can WordPress deal with the set-up any better than if the post were already there in the first place?
    In any case I am looking forward to a fix in a future version as they promised.

    They don’t really 😉

    The point is more that if you’ve had a lot of posts, and have to redirect a LOT of posts, it’s more of an issue than just redirecting one or two. That’s all.
