Share userbase with another WP installation

I know about WP MU, but because my host limits queries by database, I need to have a separate database for a couple of different sites.

Additionally, I want the different sites in different paths (as opposed to domains) of the same domain.

Is there a simple way to make multiple WP installations share a userbase?
