404 errors while running WP locally on WAMPSERVER

    Hey there!

    I installed WP locally to my Windows 7 computer using Wampserver. I installed WP into a subfolder of the www directory I called wpsandbox.

    While I can access my dashboard to make posts, install plugins, and the like, if I preview my site, I am unable to view any of my posts. Instead, I get 404 errors.

    For example, I can view my blog by loading http://localhost/wpsandbox/ in Firefox. However, if I click on a post link, like Hello World, I get this message:

    Not Found

    The requested URL /wpsandbox/uncategorized/hello-world/ was not found on this server.

    And this is true if I try to look at comments, archives, cateogries, —basically any link on the homepage! If I also try previewing a post or comment from the dashboard, I get the same error.

    The tricky part of this conundrum is, as a WP newbie, I really have no idea where the problem might lie. I did quite a bit of searching of this forum and other websites, but I’m coming up empty handed.

    Any takers on this puzzle? I’ll be glad to provide any additional information you might need. I appreciate any and all help. My whole goal of installing locally is to get a chance to learn WP before I go live.

    is mod_rewrite running on your server?

    A million thanks to esmi.

    I uncommented the mod_rewrite line in my httpd.config file, restarted all services in Wamp, and tested things out. Guess what? It works. I can now view my posts and comments either from my dashboard or from the site without any 404 errors.

    I don’t really understand why it works, but as long as there are smart coders like esmi, I can get by with my non-programming skills.

    My apologies for the delay.

    The httpd.config file can be found on the Apache server. I use WAMP on my computer (Windows 7). I simply click on the WAMP icon in my desktop tray, mouse over Apache, and click on httpd.config. The file should open up in notepad for you to edit.
