  • Hello everyone,

I have been tasked with the migration of my job’s main site which has only used static html pages for a few years. Thankfully, it is proper xhtml/css coding otherwise I’d be saying kill me now! 😛

Anyway, getting the pages into wordpress isn’t an issue (easy task. used a plugin and did some SQL queries to clean up any garbage). My situation is formatting the site for easy navigation. The site was initially created as 3 separate sites: parent site (main company) and 2 sub company projects. Each project was built on a different theme and menu layout (keyword is menu layout).

The total amount of pages on the site is 562. My one and only concern is creating a navigation system which is easy while keeping it similar to what we have… minus the obvious breaking of the 3-click rule that the last person who built the site did… a lot…

    The site is http://crs.buffalo.edu

I currently have all the html pages imported into wordpress on a local copy for testing as posts as it is easier to categorize them. Given the volume of pages and in all their nested folder glory, I did not specify any categories that they would be imported to… because the script can only dump them into 1. I have nested links within the pages linking to other pages. These links will need to be updated one at a time I guess… When I had everything imported as “pages”, the links were fine as they were linking to already parented pages. The problem was sorting them out so I could only see one particular parent or whatever. There was no easy way like there is using Joomla.

I currently run 2 personal wordpress sites myself and I’m quite good at setting up and maintaining them, however I’ve never dealt with a site of this magnitude and I am opening myself up to the community for tips and tricks to minimize the amount of flow charting I would have to do on my own to make it work. I’m prepared to put a ton of manual and laborious work into this project, I just want to minimize the amount of excess work that could have been avoided by knowing a few things.

    Thank you for any advice!
