Display X number of posts for category Y

Hello,

I’m trying to set up a news style section of my site where i can show the latest 3 stories for all categories on the front page, and on the lower level pages display only the latest 2 posts posted in a given category. Can anyone point me in the right direction, as i’m a bit stuck… Cheers!
