    I’ve always wondered why wordpress crawled my sites static pages. Today I got three trackbacks, sent from my servers (domain) dedicated ip address. I’m not saying there is anything wrong, but I’m not in control of it so I need to find out what’s up. My host support, over the phone, wasn’t sure. Below is what a typical request looks like from raw log file. Any ideas?

  • I think that means you pinged yourself – which just means that you linked to one of your own posts.

    Okay, how do I not ping myself? Other than turn it completely off? I think the wp user agent crawling site may be the broken link checker plugin (sound likely)?

    If it’s self-ping, then it won’t have anything to do with a broken link checker. Have you tried deactivating this link checker and seeing if the log entries disappear?

    link checker separate issue.

    Two initial questions (1) trackback (2) wordpress user agent.

    That aside, define self-ping if you have time. Thanks

    An interesting plugin solution;
    No Self Pings

    I think this is the user agent reference you are asking about.

    WordPress user agent: http://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/branches/3.3/wp-includes/class-http.php#L89

    'user-agent' => apply_filters( 'http_headers_useragent', 'WordPress/' . $wp_version . '; ' . get_bloginfo( 'url' )  ),

    Seems like I’d have looked at all this years ago but – I didn’t – So.

    (1) user agent is referenced in opening post (no longer a mystery)

    (2) Pings – setting is auto. This service is in my list by default:

    http://rpc.pingomatic.com/

    But when I followed the update services link I wound up at pingomatic.com (no rpc subdomain) so I was wondering, in the “Update Services” section should I add pingomatic.com as well as rpc.pingomatic.com? Or are they the same?

    Maybe you could list what you’re using.

    (3) RE: Self Ping: Sending a ping from your own site, to your own site.

    I should have said explain instead of define. Don’t want to add plugin for no self ping – I would like to know how the process works so I could manage it myself. I’ll be researching it and learn about it. The update services list would be helpful. Give me an idea of how others are setting things up.

    That’s the entire depth of my knowledge on the subject. Perhaps someone else will be able to elaborate on the topic.

    No, rpc.pingomatic.com is fine. They’re not the same, but IIRC it’s checking request types and redirecting.

    Thanks much people – I can, for my questions, consider this solved
