Support » Fixing WordPress » Getting two columns on a page in Twenty Eleven

  • I’m new, and although I’ve looked at the Q&A about two columns, I still can’t figure out what I’m supposed to do to get two columns to show up on individual pages using the Twenty-Eleven theme. I’ve checked the 2 column button in Screen options, but don’t see anything on the page that shows two columns. I expected some kind of layout that would show me the columns, and then I could put content in either one.

    Thanks

  • Admin Dashboard>Pages>All Pages>Hover over Page, click ‘Quick Edit’>Change Page Template to ‘Sidebar Template’>Save.

When you use the two column layout you have the content area and a sidebar to add Widgets into. There are other Page Templates and one can even create your own.

So, it’s not really 2 columns? To me, a sidebar is something else entirely. I know Front Page sucks, but at least I could insert a table that had 2 columns and put content in each one. I’m not really looking for widgets, just a way to divide my content on my home page. It’s probably me not understanding the vocabulary. For example, if I wanted to have a “welcome” message with an image in one column, and then information about my work in the other, I thought 2 columns would be the way to go. And the screen options gives that 2 column setting without saying anything about one having to be a sidebar.

Look at using a Page Template to change the layout or what is displayed and where it is.

If you are simply looking to place the content of your page into two columns, here is plugin that helps with the coding:

FYI…That plugin is not listed as compatible with WP3.3.1

Thanks — As I said, I’m brand new, and doing anything with html scares me. I’ll look into page templates and see if I can figure it out. I don’t need much, but on pages where I want to have a number of my books displayed, I’d rather not have to have them lined up ‘single file’ so readers have to scroll way down the page. I thought two across would be nice, and since the default page said it allowed 2 columns, it seemed “logical” that there would be a simple way to do it without having to go other places and make changes.

Thanks again…I’ll see what I can do.

here is something related – http://digitalraindrops.net/2011/09/twenty-eleven-two-post-columns/

maybe you can use the idea or formatting to create your own page templates.
