• I am thinking of using WordPress on two websites that I currently administrate. Both are not “blogs”, however I would like to use wordpress for them anyway because it would greatly help me manage and organize the content.

I should disclaim, however, that I am NOT a web designer and my web knowledge is very limited. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Scenario 1:
Website is hosted on commercial hosting service which has MySQL. My interface with the host has an option, “Create MySQL Database” and it has a tool to manage the database. I created a database. Do I need that database? Do I manage it through the server’s tool? Will I be able to manage it through wordpress?

    Scenario 2:
Website is hosted on friend’s server. Multiple websites are hosted in subdirectories. MySQL is installed on the server, but I haven’t created a database. How do I create a database? Should I install WordPress on my subdirectory? If I give it to our webmaster to install on the server, how do I and others access it to use it?

    Thank you!

You must have a mysql database and php running on server.

Do I manage it through the server’s tool?
Yes – they should have phpmyadmin installed.

Will I be able to manage it through wordpress?
    Only back it up.

How do I create a database?
You do that through your host- either by request or through the cpanel, vdeck or whatever your host has as to admin the site.

Should I install WordPress on my subdirectory?
Do you want to? Then do it.

If I give it to our webmaster to install on the server, how do I and others access it to use it?
Whoever sets it up will be given admin authority for WP.
He can define roles to make others admins, authors, etc.

I really encourage you to read the codex. It will greatly simplify your WP life in the long run.
