• Hi I tried to change the number of post showing on my front page (www.velocitywa.com.au)by typing !important in front of the new number (beause I’d read that was the way to do it) and got this error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_LNUMBER in /home/velocity/public_html/wp-content/themes/suburbia/functions.php on line 52

and now I can’t log in, get to thedashboard or see the site at all. Has anyone got any suggestions about how to fix this? Have I just killed my site 🙁
    tks

  • If you can get FTP access, edit the file or rename the theme directory.

Thanks Charles, this is probably a really stupid question but where would I get FTP access? I can’t get to my usual log in

If you have a control panel from you hosting, or your host would provide it for you, It is probably http://ftp.velocitywa.com.au with you hosting username and password.

    without the http://

no luck, I can’t get into the ftp server either, it keeps saying there’s no internet connection, but I can access other sites.

Please do not use a browser for ftp access to your sites! Use an FTP client!

you need to use an FTP client app. If you don’t have one installed, there are several to choose from. A popular free one is FileZilla which is available for windows, OSX & Linux.

You need to find out your FTP hostname (or IP address), FTP user name & password. Ask your hosting company about these if you are unsure.

!important is CSS syntax. you seem to have used it in PHP which is why it caused the problem. If you are unsure about the difference, you can pick up a lot of knowledge at http://www.w3schools.com/

Ah, thank you. This is a very steep learning curve. I have installed Filezilla and am now trying to get access sorted becasue the password I was using doesn’t seem to be working.
Thanks cubecolour for that link. I have been using a teach yourself HTML book but I’m struggling.
thanks for all your help though, it is comforting knowing there is so much knowledge out there!
