When I downloaded and installed WordPress it overwrote my website, which was unexpected. Now my old website is replaced by a sample blog. I did not mean to do that!

I did the install on Nov 23, 2011 and there is no possibility to restore the old website. But I am thinking that the old code is still there, just that WP is now controlling what shows on the website.

How can I “uninstall” the appropriate files to get back to the old webpages?

The site in question is http://www.wy7i.com

    Any help greatly appreciated!

    Paul

  • Your old site is still there. http://www.wy7i.com/index.htm

It happened because you installed wordpress in a directory where you already had an existing site.

Here is a list of all the files and directories WordPress created. http://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/branches/3.2

I recommend making a full backup of your root directory before you start deleting anything, just to make sure everything goes smoothly.

    Hello Clayton,
    Thanks for the quick answer.
Now, should I take the backup, and then start by deleting all those files in the list you gave me?

After that, will it automagically come up as before?

I think that’s what I would try. Like you say, take a complete backup first just in case, then start removing only the files and directories in that list from your live site. Just removing the “index.php” file will probably be enough to restore your old site, but if you want to clean it up completely, remove all the files and directories on that list.

    Clayton,
    That worked beautifully.
Thanks so much for the advice.
Hopefully, next time I will pay closer attention to where WP gets installed!!

    Have a great day,

    Paul

You’re welcome! It happens to everyone at least once. Glad I could help.
