• Help! Minutes ago I was editing a new page, clicked “update”. And now, the ENTIRE site is gone! I’ve logged out, and logged in and the dashboard is showing no pages, no posts, no nothing.

What on earth has happened? I was quite careful to click “update”. Even if I clicked delete, wouldn’t just that specific new page get deleted? Everything is gone! I’m feeling sick — any suggestions?

This all happened like 4 minutes ago.

  • If you don’t have a backup, try contacting your hosting provider right away and ask them if they have one (most major hosting providers will run a backup every 24-48 hours).

Always backup your WP install before doing any changes, especially those that involve themes and plugins.

There are some free plugins available that might help you with backups. Some can simplify making a backup so you can 1-click to get a file with everything you need if something goes wrong while you are making changes.

There are also some plugins that will help you automate the backup process so that you always have a fallback and don’t have to rely on yourself remembering to do it, or on your hosting provider to have backed up your files.

There was a LOT of content on here. I cannot fathom what button I could possibly have pushed, that would do this. Even if I selected to “delete my entire site” — don’t you typically get asked to “confirm” that you want to do this? Even the menus created are GONE. It’s a complete BLANK!?

Oh, this is really, really bad!!

Your site is there with a lot of content as well! 😉

After Dhikra posted, I just checked again and am glad to see it looks to be back. I was getting a 404 when I checked it before so perhaps there was just a database hiccup.

Make sure to backup while you still can though, just in case.

Phew! Yes — a big thank you to the tech fellow at Hostgator who got us back up and running.

Turns out there was a glitch in one of the WordPress database tables, disabling the entire site. Once the table was repaired, order was restored and I began to breathe again. I will be sure to do regular backups. Thank you all for your comments and moral support!
