Yesterday I downloaded WP into my account on a local provider…no problem. I already had a Victoria Storytellers Guild website at WP.com
I imported that website into my local account. No problem. all smiles.
There were a few minor adjustments to be made. Everything went smoothly. I was unable to get rid of the Meta and search widgets in a right hand column and they were physically interfering with my calendar. …No problem, …I covered these two widgets with blank text widgets. Presto, the offending widgets were obscured.
NOW, my problem. I have no way of getting from the public page to the dashboard…..Previously, on WP.com, I saw an “edit” on every page and a “view page” on the dashboard. When I went looking for it , it was gone… and i can’t log in through the “meta “ widget because it is hidden,..
From my limited novice point of view, there is no way for me to get to my dashboard??? suggestions?

Try http://your-blog-url/wp-admin/ It should send you either to the dashboard (if you are logged in) or to the login prompt.

    Thank-you Jan,
Yes, that does take me to the login prompt.

I then enter my user name and password and there is no error message, the user name remains and the password simply disappears. I’m left with the login prompt and still not getting to my dashboard. ???

I think I have, sort of, solved this problem. I went to my service provider and logged in. I then changed the url to include the directory where I put WP and …./wp-admin/. Presto. I was at my dashboard. I then made the Meta widget visible. Now I can log in froim the public site.
