Support » Installing WordPress » Upload WP files to ftp – read errors (code -36)

  • Hi there

Trying to upload unzipped wordpress files from a folder on my desktop to my ftp site to the public_html folder, but keep getting the following errors:
“The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in “” could not be read or written” Error code -36
    http://skit.ch/b2n4
“The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in readme.txt could not be read or written” Error code -36
    http://skit.ch/b2n2
“The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in admin-header.php could not be read or written” Error code -36
    http://skit.ch/b2nh

Had the same problem with the license.txt too. The errors are stopping me from completing uploading of WP files to FTP, so can’t finish installation.

Read on old WP troubleshooting files that license.txt and readme.txt were superfluous and could be deleted, but still can’t account for the other errors.

Suspect it may be something to do with incompatibility of my ancient Macbook.

Running OSX 10.5.2 on my Macbook.
Running PHP 5.2.17 and MySQL 5.0.92-community on my cPanel.

    Anyone able to help?
    Thanks, Caroline

    Seriously struggling here.

I tried reloading Web Disk Access on my computer (making sure I was using version OSX 10.5+ Leopard), and I tried deleting readme.txt and license.txt files, but I’m still getting the same error: unable to upload unzipped wordpress installation files to ftp (to public_html).

Any wordpress gods or godesses out there who can help?

It’s not a WordPress problem. Perhaps your host has a browser based file manager you could try.

Okay, started to try doing that from the cPanel File Manager, only I can’t do a bulk import. So I tried using ftp manager Cyberduck, but am still getting error message and can’t upload. Cyberduck throws back permission errors for readme.txt and license.txt and then can’t read subsequent files.

It’s a new domain. Wondering if it has been set up properly – I wouldn’t really know because I don’t know about domain setup. I’ve sent a message to helpdesk support. Cross fingers.

You need check with your host as looks like server problem.
