inserting media function won't work in WP 3.2.1

Up until this morning, inserting media (images or files) into posts was working fine. But now, while in the edit a new post area, I can still upload an image or a PDF file from the “add media” icon, I no longer have the dialog that allows me to “insert into post” — all I can do is save changes. The upload function is working, and I can manually create a post and link to the PDF files using HTML code, but the function is no longer working.
