• The thumbnails created by rich snippets are all 4:3 aspect ratio by default, even when your source image is square. Rich snippet stretches your square image and so, deforms it. This can be seen in the results of the Rich Snippets Testing Tool. Here is an example. Do “View Image” on the thumbnail to view it correctly.

Some, though, have found a way to force a square rich snippet thumbnail. Take a look at this result set.

Anybody have any ideas about how this thumbnail aspect ratio is being specified?

    Thanks.

  • Use any free image editing tool such as GIMP, Paint.net, except MS Paint. These can be use to shrink or re size an image.

Thank you for your suggestion. I’m a Corel user myself. My question is not about how to resize an image, lee. Sorry if I was unclear.

In the first example link above you can see that the rich snippet is
1.) Dynamically resizing an image to create a thumbnail. There is no need to create a thumbnail for it to use.
2.) Editing the pixel dimensions without regard to the source aspect ratio.

In the second example link you can see that two or three sites have learned how to control this process. Compare the aspect ratio of the thumbnails to the aspect ratio of the source images. You can see what I mean.
